ZOMBIE’S T-DRAMA REVIEW: Someone Like You Episode 8

at the movies

I’m not gonna lie, I did an equal amount of cheering and yelling this week as Zhan Cheng undergoes surgery, Ya Ti follows her heart and Bo Yan proves he’s the biggest slime ball on the face of the planet. (As if we didn’t already know that!) With so much to talk about let’s not waste any more time with introductions! I’ve got a drama to talk about!

moment of truth

Okay so we left off last week with Zhan Cheng agreeing to the cornea transplant and everyone’s over the moon about this sudden change of heart. And who can blame them? Zhan Cheng’s family and friends have been suffering for year as they watch Zhan Cheng wander the path of self-destruction so it only makes sense for them to be celebrating. Heck, I was doing the happy dance of joy and I’ve only been around since episode one! A part of me kept wondering if Zhan Cheng wouldn’t back out at the last-minute but all that worry was pointless. Apparently when Zhan Cheng commits to something, he goes all in and I couldn’t be happier. (Mostly because that means when he finally decides to give Yu Xi his heart, he’s never going to take it back. But I’m getting ahead of myself…) Now we just have to wait until next week to find out if the surgery was successful… *wails* Why drama gods!?! Why must you torture me so!?!

movies are great

Of course before Zhan Cheng goes under the knife (or laser???) he has to prove, once again, that he’s truly the ideal man and a much better boyfriend than Bo Yan could ever dream of being. Taking Yu Xi to the movies for no other reason than because she’d said she wanted to go was such a sweet gesture. Or it was until he told her what they were watching! BWAHAHAHAHAHA! Zhan Cheng! You little rascal you! Taking Yu Xi to watch a horror film just so you can have her clinging to you while she’s scared out of her wits was absolutely brilliant. I kinda felt sorry for Yu Xi, having to endure the movie but something tells me she didn’t mind so much and I know for a fact Zhan Cheng didn’t mind at all! HAHAHAHAHA! Sorry, I can’t stop laughing about this! It was just too good!

JERK WAD

While Zhan Cheng is busy solidifying himself as the world’s most amazing man, Bo Yan is solidifying his place as the world’s biggest sleaze bag. I mean seriously! Can this guy get any more despicable? It’s bad enough he’s been playing Yu Xi for who knows how long but now he has to go and force himself on Vanessa? Really!?! That first kiss was bad on its own but then he had to go and do it again, forcefully and totally against her will, and I was suddenly wishing I could throw a brick at his head. But then Vanessa, who should have been punching him in the face, has to go and kiss him back and I’m just… I can’t… I… VANESSA! WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING!?! Sorry! I just suddenly find myself wanting to throw a brick at her head too! I mean really! What the heck was she thinking? Is she really so desperate for companionship she has to stoop to the level of a slime ball like Bo Yan? I mean I get that she’s upset about Zhan Cheng not returning her affection and all but that doesn’t mean she has to give in to the advances of a punk like Bo Yan. Oh, and another thing. Vanessa really needs to start drinking at home. This whole going out and getting wasted in public is not only bad for her public image, it’s also really bad for her love life. I mean look who she ended up spending the night with… AGAIN! This is just one of those times where I have to shake my head and roll my eyes and give her up as a lost cause. I don’t think Vanessa is ever going to learn and I can almost guarantee this thing with Bo Yan is going to came back to haunt her.

twins

While I’m ranting, I might as well take this opportunity to rage about the ridiculousness of Ya Ti and her all-knowing heart. I’m sorry but no matter how hard I try, I cannot accept Ya Ti as a serious character. The absolute absurdity of her taking on so many traits of Luo Han, simply because she has her heart, is just too much! It’s a heart people. A HEART! It’s doesn’t think, it doesn’t feel, it doesn’t do anything but pump blood. Okay? I know we all say the heart is the seat of emotion but we also all know that’s just an expression. A heart doesn’t really do anything but beat and there’s no way Ya Ti could take on any of Luo Han’s characteristics, let alone her memories, just because she’s using her heart. IT’S SIMPLY NOT POSSIBLE! So why? Why? WHY? Are we trying to make Ya Ti into a Luo Han clone? What’s the point? To bring conflict? We already have enough! To bring a love interest? We already have more than enough. So why? Why must Ya Ti constantly turn up, feeling what Luo Han used to feel and vaguely remembering things Luo Han used to know and being lead inexplicably to Zhan Cheng’s hospital room? And what’s with the creepy, do-everything-exactly-the-same-as-Yu Xi? I get that Luo Han and Yu Xi were (are?) twins but that doesn’t mean they do everything the exact same way. I guess this is just another way to prove Ya Ti and Luo Han are one and the same but c’mon! Do we really need more of this nonsense?

lightbulb

At least Yu Xi has finally seen the light when it comes to Bo Yan. True, the truth hit her hard but really, I think she’s handling it rather well. She didn’t freak out or try to run away, she just kinda took it all in stride and I applaud her for that. Too many times when drama land heroines find out they’re responsible for someone’s unhappiness and they run away, rather than take responsibility for it but now Yu Xi. Instead she apologizes, over and over again, to Zhan Cheng for being the source of so many problems. Granted, she apologized while Zhan Cheng was sleeping but he still managed to overhear her wails of sorrow so I’m calling it good. I do have to wonder if Yu Xi isn’t going to try to disappear once Zhan Cheng gets his eyesight back. (Which had better be next week! If that stinking surgery didn’t work… Ugh! I’d better not even go there. The feels are way too strong!) It would make sense for her to want to distance herself from Zhan Cheng in order to keep him from any more harm but if he’s back to his old self, he should be more than capable of taking care of himself. This is the guy who beat Bii in a high-stakes race, after all. Whether Yu Xi decides to back off from Zhan Cheng or not isn’t really as important as what she’s going to do with Bo Yan, now that she knows the truth. I’d like to think this is going to be the end of things between them but she’s such a push-over when it comes to the people she loves, it’s possible she may decide to give him another chance. (Oh, I hope she doesn’t! I may have to throw a brick at her head too!) I guess I’m just gonna have to do what I always do in situations such as these… I’m just gonna have to wait and see. *sigh*

      1. Blah wat happened to my uber long post?!! Anyhow here it sorta is again..

Yes I was squealing and grinning like a fool this week watching this scene n have to confess to rewatching it a few times, which I am sure will be afew more between now and the new episode! Lol whose says u have to stare at someone intently in the eyes to smoulder them or us the audience for that matter, ZC’s tender look as he comforts her was GOLD, smexy gold!!!! Love how she had a split second of “well this is kinda awkward” which goes out the window when the next fright scene occurs and she clings to him for dear life. Never seen a man so happy to have his personal space invaded or be used n abused for his body!! Teehee

        1. Right!?! That was seriously the best scene ever! I loved every single second of it and ZC’s smug little smile when YX clings to him is just priceless. That man has got it so bad for her! Now all he has to do is admit it!

        2. That was my favorite scene of this episode too! and yes, I rewatched it countless time too. The background music is really setting the mood despite all the screaming heard, lol…

  1. Jumping up and down with this development, Yu Xi finding out that her a** BF is just rotten to the bone. And if she takes him back, Good Lord!!!!!! Not just a brick, but tons of them would befall her. Yeah, I feel that strongly about it!

And Ya Ti, I would have let it pass if it’s just one trait or even just a specific food that relates to Luo Han. But NO, it has be….heart transplant=whole persona make-over. Every actions, every word out of her mouth are just Luo Han; she just doesn’t have any personality outside of Luo Han. And it doesn’t help that the actress is kinda boring.

But Yu Xi and Zhan CHeng just makes up for it. They’re so fun to watch, inherently good people and not boring, at all.

    1. You’re so right about Ya Ti. She has no personality of her own. She’s nothing but a Luo Han clone and it’s so very annoying. I’d be happy if she just disappeared but we all know that’s not gonna happen. Thank goodness Yu Xi and Zhan Cheng are so great! They give us much to be happy for. 🙂

    2. Yeah, I kinda feel pitiful for YaTi, like where is the real YaTi? Gone and replaced by LuoHan? I don’t know how the show will play this aspect out, at least for K-drama Summer Scent (heart transplant confusing feeling too) there is a clear closure in the last few minutes of the show.
I guess the actress is playing the role as required, She mentioned in the BTS of this episode that being gentle, demure, soft-spoken is really really hard for her to do and thus this is her biggest acting challenge yet.

      1. Well if that’s the case, I’d say she’s nailing this role. She’s so soft-spoken and demure she practically blends into the background. I’m sure she’s a wonderful person in real life but Ya Ti as a character is just so boring. I can’t support her because there’s nothing worth supporting. She’s a Luo Han clone and nothing more. It’s a sad waste of a character really and it’s going to be supremely frustrating if ZC decides falling for his ex’s clone is something he wants to do. Ugh! I don’t even wanna think about it!

  2. I’m kinda behind on this show by a few weeks. I like to marathon so it is working for me. Found this link on the Soompi forum and am so happy to read your recaps and others comments about this great little drama. I like the leads and the tone of the show. They have a good mix of light and serious. Many times Taiwanese dramas are so goofy that I cannot take them very seriously. Thanks for your recaps and your time!

    1. I’m so happy you found me and even more happy that you’re enjoying my reviews! I hope you come back often and join us in our discussions. It’s always more fun to watch a drama when you’ve got other people to squee and/or vent with! ^^
