ZOMBIE’S DRAMA REVIEW: Mask Episodes 15-16

in his sight

I swear, when it comes to this drama, I’ve completely lost my ability to remain calm and rational. If Min Woo’s in a scene, I’m bawling like a baby. If Suk Hoon’s in a scene, I’m spitting venom like a viper. There’s just so much going on, it’s hard for me to deal with such an emotional roller-coaster and then we get this confession at the end of episode fifteen and… Well, there’s just a whole lot of ugly crying going on right now… Pardon me… I think I’m gonna need a moment…

research

To keep myself from breaking down again, let’s talk about everything else that happened in this week’s episodes. We left off last week with Min Woo uncovering Eun Ha’s secret identity. While I’m still having a hard time trying to understand why Mi Yeon is so dead-set on revealing Ji Sook to Min Woo, I can’t say I’m disappointed. I’ve been waiting for the truth to come out for a long time so even though I’d have preferred Ji Sook be the one to tell Min Woo the truth, the fact that he knows is good enough for me.

drunk

I can’t blame Min Woo for taking this new hard. I mean he’s just found out he’s married to a completely different person than he thought he was but at the same time, Min Woo really didn’t react as badly as he could have. Sure, he spent a couple of nights in a drunken stupor but that’s really not all that bad, as far as reactions go. Actually, I was rather impressed with the way Min Woo handled things. He had his moment of anger and self-pity but then he started to dig into Ji Sook’s past in an effort to understand what kind of person she really is and what he found simply confirmed everything he already knew; namely that Ji Sook is a warm-hearted, caring individual who makes everyone around her feel at ease. Knowing that, Min Woo is quick to determine Ji Sook has a good reason for playing the part of Eun Ha and he’s willing to forgive her, even if he’s not able to admit that to himself until the very end.

that was close

With Ji Sook’s identity revealed, it only makes sense for her to want to divorce Min Woo. I mean what woman wants to be married to a man she loves under false pretenses? I could easily see Min Woo and Eun Ha divorcing so Min Woo and Ji Sook could be married but I think that has to come later, if at all. For now, Min Woo and Ji Sook are both better off together as Suk Hoon starts to take this murder business seriously. This week we had two different murder attempts and though I’m disappointed in Suk Hoon’s shoddy attempts to take Min Woo’s life, I’m glad they didn’t succeed. Knowing someone’s out to get them is going to keep Min Woo and Ji Sook together longer and that just makes me happy. In a sick, twisted kind of way…

losing his touch

I have to say, I really am disappointed in the way Suk Hoon seems to be losing his evil edge. I don’t know if he’s just being worn down by Ji Sook’s constant messing with his plans or if the fact his wife is now acting against him is causing him to suffer from an overload or stress, or if he really is just slipping in the bad guy department but he’s kind of fallen from his super-evil villain role and that’s just sad. At least for him… I think Mi Yeon said it best when she told her husband he needed to stop focusing so much on the target and focus more on himself. He really is looking so intently at Min Woo and Ji Sook and what he wants from them that he’s getting a bit sloppy on the personal front. Just look at the way things have developed between him and Mi Yeon. There was a time when Mi Yeon would do any thing for Suk Hoon, even when she knew it was detrimental to her own well-being but not anymore. Now Mi Yeon knows her husband is plotting something awful and I’m pretty sure if anyone is going to take Suk Hoon down, it’s going to be her. If only she’d find the gumption to kick that slime-ball to the curb.

check your focus

The good news is, Mi Yeon is definitely beginning to find her gumption. She’s kicked the laissez-faire attitude and her drinking habit and is taking a very hands-on approach to things as she tries to find out what it is, exactly, Suk Hoon is up to. It’s obvious Mi Yeon knows her husband is out to get Min Woo and she’s kind of trying to save her brother from death but I think there’s still a lot of lingering feelings for Suk Hoon that are clouding her judgment. Mi Yeon said herself that Suk Hoon was her target but is she trying to reel him in or drive him off? That’s what I can’t understand. Does Mi Yeon want her husband to come back to her as a loving, doting husband and potential father or is Mi Yeon finally fed up with all of his lies and is now ready to send him packing? I think for most of this week’s episodes, she’s hoping Suk Hoon will come back to her (which is why I think she revealed Ji Sook’s true identity to Min Woo, so she would leave and Suk Hoon could focus solely on Mi Yeon) but this hunting incident may prove to be a turning point for her. I think Mi Yeon loves her brother too much to let him fall to the likes of Suk Hoon and I have a feeling she’s going to start seeing Suk Hoon is a much less positive light.

counseling

While Mi Yeon and Suk Hoon’s marriage seems to be falling apart, Min Woo and Ji Sook’s seems to be just beginning. Sure it took an almost divorce to get them to admit their true feelings for each other but I’d say that marriage counseling was worth it! Hearing Min Woo admit he loves Ji Sook was pretty much the best thing ever. It’s about time those two finally admitted their feelings for each other! Now they just have to team up to take down Suk Hoon and they can go on to live happily ever after. That’s what I’m hoping for anyway… How this story actually ends is still anyone’s guess.

  1. I think the world would be a better place if every couple saw that marriage counselor, they were so darn cute thinking about the things they liked about the other person. And the results were amazing. I felt like the heavens should have opened up, Angels should have been singing the hallelujah chorus when they finally kissed!!! It took sixteen episodes, and the poor guy is going to have a neck ache (they should have had her up a step or two from him, but I was so relieved to finally be past this hurdle of truth telling and reconciliation. I can’t even say that I care about the evil plans of the brother-in-law right now because the ending erased any feelings except for warm and fuzzy ones. I know there is a bumpy ride ahead for them, but I’m so pleased with how far they’ve come.

This is one of those dramas I will really miss when it’s over. Two weeks to go…
