TUNE OF THE WEEK: Zico “Boys and Girls”

title

I have been waiting so long for this, I’d almost given up hope that it would ever come to be. For as long as I can remember I’ve been waiting (rather impatiently) for the day Zico would release a single that actually felt like Zico and finally that day has come. (Pardon me while I do a happy dance of joy…)

Two weeks ago, when Zico released his “Tell Me Yes or No” single and accompanying video, I was stoked. 6I was hoping that would be the track be much more Zico and much less his over-zealous attempt to prove to all the haters that an idol group leader can also be a bad-ass rapper. To some extent I got that from “Tell Me Yes or No” but the track still lacked the Zico flare I’d been craving. I was disappointed to have yet another Zico track that just didn’t seem to fit this incredible artist but I did have hope that his upcoming single would be miraculously turn out to be the song of my dreams.

Well Monday came around and Zico’s new track dropped and OH HOLY FLIP! I nearly fell out of my chair! THIS WAS THE SONG I’D BEEN WAITING FOR! Perfectly highlighting Zico’s skill as a rapper, “Boys and Girls” proves that Zico has an incredible gift; but we already knew that. 2His flow, his style, his wit… it’s all there, just as it should be and I couldn’t be happier. But “Boys and Girls” goes beyond the rapping and I think it’s this that really does it for me. By teaming up with R&B artist Babylon, Zico incorporates just enough vocal pizzaz into this song to make it stand out as something special. I think the blending of Babylon and Zico’s voices is nothing short of magic; they work so well together. And can we just take a moment to appreciate the amazingness that is Zico’s singing voice, please? Because seriously! When that boy sings I go to a whole other place… It’s just… I just… *sigh*

As far as the “Boys and Girls” video goes, I could do without all the half-naked women but whatever. It fits the theme of the song so if Zico wants to be surrounded by all the bikini-clad ladies, more power to him. 4I do love the colors of the video though. Everything is so bright and vibrant, which is such a switch from the typical concepts embraced this time of year. Going along with all the bright colors, I’m in love with Zico’s style in this video. The hoodies and sweaters, jeans and boots, even the hair and all its crazy variations… I think it’s all fantastic and I’m now on a quest to track down those sweaters because I think they’d be happy living in my closet. I’m also in love with the choreography. I’m not a dancer so I don’t have a clue what to say about the dancing other than when I watch it, it makes me happy. This song makes me happy. Zico makes me happy.

12And that pretty much sums things up for me. Zico has finally released a single that makes me happy. I am happy. (I’m also on the verge of a fangirl meltdown because I’m going to see Zico and the rest of Block B next week and I’m so flipping excited I… OMG! I’M GONNA SEE BLOCK B NEXT WEEK!!! AAAUUUUGGGGHHHHHH!!!)

11Okay, I need to stop before I have a total meltdown so that’s what I’m gonna do. Of course, before I go I have to ask what you thought of Zico’s new single. Am I too far gone in my Zico love to be objective or am I right in thinking this song is pretty darn awesome? (I have a feeling his all-kill with this song proves I’m not just crazy but you never know…) As always, I love hearing from you so be sure to let me know what you’re thinking by leaving me a comment below!
