TUNE OF THE WEEK: TVXQ “Something”

If you love K-Pop but are looking to add something a bit different to your playlist this year, then TVXQ has just the tune for you; so naturally, it has to be my Tune of the Week!

Released yesterday (January 1, 2014), “Something” is the lead single for TVXQ’s  upcoming album, something TENSE, which is scheduled for release on January 6, 2014 and marks the tenth debut anniversary for the ever-popular group. A jazzy mix of big band, swing and K-Pop, “Something” is truly something. The song itself clips along nicely, incorporating big band brass, a jazzy baseline and a sweet 20’s era feel that makes you wish you hadn’t given up on those swing dance lessons you took all those years ago.

The MV for “Something” is just as sweet as the song itself, incorporating various special effects styles while at the same time highlighting both the vocal and dance talent of Yunho and Changmin. Of course, any MV for a song with such a strong swing feel has to be fulltvxq of all of the iconic images from the twenties and “Something” does not disappoint. Yunho and Changmin both pull of a dapper Al Capone-esque look, while background dancers look like they could have just stepped out of the nearest speakeasy; add to that, classic twenties era cars and a couple of Fred Astaire inspired dance solos and you’ve got an MV that both entertains and delights.

So what do you think of TVXQ’s latest release? Do you like it as much as I do or do you wish they would have stuck to a style more typical of the duo? I’d love to hear your thoughts so don’t be afraid to comment below!
