I know I’ve already fangirl spazzed over Tanyang’s comeback album, RISE, but the lead single, “Eyes, Nose, Lips” is so far beyond amazing that I just had to make it this week’s featured tune.
Teasing fans last November with his hip-hop hit, “Ringa Linga,” Taeyang promised a comeback, six months later, he made good on his word, bringing the world his second full-length album RISE. As was expected, Taeyang’s comeback brought with it a highly anticipated MV which honestly caught me by surprise. Having been on a “Ringa Linga” high for months (and I’m still not sick of that song) I was expecting the lead single to follow in the same vein so you can imagine my surprise when “Eyes, Nose, Lips” proved to be, not another hip-hop masterpiece, but a soulful R&B ballad that perfectly highlights Taeyang’s incredible voice.
Beginning with nothing more than a piano for accompaniment, “Eyes, Nose, Lips” immediately gives off a feeling of sorrow and regret as Taeyang says goodbye to a lost love, begging for death and forgiveness for all of his shortcomings. As the song progresses, so does the complexity of the music, as the sole piano is gradually blended with percussion, guitar, strings and background vocals to produce a sound that conveys all of the emotion Taeyang delivers so powerfully on his own.
While “Eyes, Nose, Lips” is powerful on its own, the music video takes the power of this song to a whole new level but not in any way that one would expect. Consisting of nothing more than Taeyang and a billboard, the video would, at first glance, seem to something of a let-down, at least to those expecting a high-budget über-production, but it doesn’t take one long to realize that the simplicity of the set and a couple of well-timed pyrotechnics are the perfect accompaniment to Taeyang’s soulful performance.
I could sing the praises of “Eyes, Nose, Lips” for days but honestly, this is one of those songs you just have to experience for yourself and once you do, be sure to come back and tell me what you thought of it. It would be nice to know I’m not the only one loving this song!
Me again ^^. I just fell in love of this song. Taeyang have made an awesome comeback. By the way have you listened Tablo’s version?
I did listen to Tablo’s version (and all of the other cover versions out there) and I really liked it but for me, the original will always be the best. There’s just something about the way Taeyang conveys so much emotion through his voice, it’s just fantastic. Seriously, I swoon every single time I listen to this song and I’ve listened to it A LOT! In all honesty, the entire Rise album is amazing and I highly recommend it. It’s easily one of the best albums of the year.
