With Topp Dogg, C-Clown and BTS all making comebacks this week, trying to decide which song to feature as my “Tune of the Week” was difficult but in the end, I found myself coming back to BTS’s “Boy in Luv” over and over again.
So what is it about “Boy in Luv” that keeps bringing me back? It’s hard to say. I could be generic and say that its sheer awesomeness is what I’m drawn to but that wouldn’t make for a very good review so I’ll try to be more specific. I think a lot of what I’m drawn to is the music itself. “Boy in Luv” has a very definite hip hop beat bobbing along over a powerful rock undertone which translates into a musical combination I find absolutely irresistible. I love the way the underlying rock of “Boy in Luv” shines in the chorus while the verses are full of the rough and tumble hip hop feel that endears BTS to us as fans.
But the music isn’t the only thing that draws me to BTS, it’s the lyrics as well. Perhaps it’s because Valentine’s Day is tomorrow that I’m feeling all squishy and sentimental about they lyrics but really, if ever any of the BTS sang this song to a girl and meant it, I have no doubt she’d melt completely. How could she not?
This entire song is the lament of a boy trying to figure out why he’s so crazy in love with a girl and how he can become her oppa and that’s not something a girl can easily ignore.
As much as I love the music and the lyrics, it’s how they’re combined in the MV for “Boy in Luv” that really pushes this song over the top. In typical BTS fashion, the majority of the “Boy in Luv” MV is spent showing the boys in all of their “bad boy” glory, this time as a group of rowdy high school boys and I have to say, this image really works for them. They are the very personification of the rebellious high school spirit which, when blended with the rock undertones of the music and the power of the lyrics… Well, it’s just magic. Why? Because all of that strength and power comes crashing down the moment the bridge hits and Jin pulls out that rose and confesses to the girl he loves and… (Pardon me while I have a complete meltdown here… Why is a bad boy’s confession so much better than a good boy’s!?! Ahh! The feels!!! ) …then the moment is gone and BTS is back in all of their bad boy glory only now we know that underneath that tough exterior lies an adorable softy that just wants to be loved. *And every fangirl swoons*
Needless to say, this MV has solidified BTS’s place on my ever-growing list of biases and “Boy in Luv” has been playing on “repeat,” on my iPod, since I bought it. So what do you think of BTS’s “Boy in Luv?” Do you love it as much as I do? I’d love to hear what you think so be sure to “say what you want” in the comments below!
