HALLYU ZOMBIE DRAMA REVIEW: Emergency Couple Episodes 5-6 (4/4)

Tanya: So this week we were greeted with a few over-the-top situations. Does anyone else think Chang Min’s mother is a little excessive?

 too many pills

Karen: A little?

Tanya: Sarcasm… She was extremely excessive, for sure.

Karen: She did not have to put her life on the line for anything, yet she did.

Zombie: I was a little confused as to whether or not she was actually trying to commit suicide or just OD enough to get everyone’s attention.

Tanya: Well we already know she’s a drama queen, so attention whore wouldn’t be much more of a stretch.

Karen: There is no way she would try to kill herself. She still has so many goals to accomplish according to her. She needs family respect and Chang Min needs a new, respectable bride!

Zombie: I know you touched on this in your post Karen but if being a doctor is so important in her family, why in the world didn’t she become a doctor herself?

 only cared about your looks

Tanya: She said she married a doctor and Chang Min had to be one because she was too focused on being pretty to become one herself. That totally makes sense, duh…

Zombie: Ummm… I might have to call that one a “fail.” Anyway… I don’t see how she possesses the right to berate Jin Hee, first for not being a doctor and then for becoming one, when she isn’t a doctor herself. I know Sung Sook thinks she’s the most important person on the planet but how does one live without any sense of decency at all?

Tanya: Because she’s poor. Apparently it’s always okay to look down on poor people. She’s just a ridiculous character.

 am i dead

Karen: I agree. I find it strange that her two sisters can become doctors, yet Sung Sook is not or cannot become a doctor. She must have been the black sheep of the family since birth. I think it’s another case of putting one’s dreams upon one’s children.

Zombie: So since she’s the lowest on her family totem pole, she has to belittle everyone below her to make herself feel more important? I suppose that makes sense in her warped mind but to the rest of us, she’s just ridiculous.

Tanya: That’s all the truth. She is the black sheep and she values herself so little that she had to use her husband, who now hates her, and her son to accomplish what she was unable to do herself. It’s really a crappy way to live, honestly. And Chang Min is such a mama’s boy that he will never have the ability to stand up to her.

Zombie: On the upside, watching Jin Hee put up with all of Sung Sook’s nonsense has won her a place in the hearts of both of our leading men. Not like it really matters when it comes to Dr. Gook since we all know she’ll never end up with him but it’s still fun to watch. It’s my favorite part of this drama, so far.

 you two are similar

Karen: I think Dr. Gook likes her already. They are so similar and I bet he knows what Jin Hee is going through.

Zombie: Like I said in my post this week, I think he sees a lot of himself in her and is drawn to that. When you combine that with the way she’s treated at work, the way she’s treated by Sung Sook and the way she behaves at snack shops when she’s drunk, it’s a recipe for instant love. Or at least growing infatuation… Either one works for me. I’m just afraid that Dr. Shim is going to have some serious issues with Jin Hee if she starts stealing Dr. Gook’s attention. Jin Hee’s life could become even more difficult if Dr. Shim is out to get her.

Tanya: I think Jin Hee will be in the clear. Dr. Gook seems more like the older brother type with her than love interest. Either way, some jealousy is going to fly (because romantic comedy that is lacking the comedy part). That’s just how it is in Dramaland.

reminds me of the old days

Karen: Dr. Shim is such a mystery to me. If she loved Dr. Gook or is at least interested in him, why would she go to the United States and then come back later to work with him again? Or is this all a coincidence? Dr. Shim and Dr. Gook are not getting any younger.

Zombie: I wonder if it has something to do with an incident in Dr. Gook’s past that perhaps, is somewhat similar to what has happened with Jin Hee and Chang Min and the death of the cancer patient. Perhaps she was involved in a similar incident with Dr. Gook and left to escape the consequences or perhaps that was one of the consequences???

Tanya: It could be as simple as she left to study further. There was probably an incident, but I don’t necessarily know if she was a part of it. This is why there is so much backstory that we need and aren’t really getting.

Zombie: I think all of us are ready for an episode’s worth of flashbacks, just so we can get some sort of idea of what’s really going on. How can we love these characters when they don’t really make any sense to us? We need to know why they’re doing what they’re doing so we can know whether or not we can really get behind them.

 should i go fishing

Karen: Yes, I don’t believe Dr. Shim would just leave Dr. Gook in a state of distress and go to the United States. Also, why isn’t Dr. Gook an official doctor, but is a resident? Has he been demoted or has he gone fishing too long?

Zombie: I thought something was mentioned about him simply choosing to remain a resident as some sort of self-inflicted penance for something that happened in the past. I’m assuming whatever that was, it’s what sent him off fishing for a year.

Tanya: That’s a long time for fishing, seriously. I love fishing and I couldn’t even imagine… What do you guys feel about lovey Park Sang Hyuk and Lee Young Ae’s first fight?

 are you annoyed at me

crazy eyesZombie: Personally, I find them utterly ridiculous. As for their fight, aren’t most fights between newlyweds pretty ridiculous? I can remember some of mine…

Karen: Why did I see that coming? And for no reason though I thought newlyweds are typically lovey. I guess that doesn’t last too long.

Zombie: Every couple has their moments, even newlyweds but I think we talked about this before… Aren’t they pretty much doomed to teeter on the brink of divorce before Chang Min and Jin Hee step in and save them at the last possible moment?

Tanya: Even the stress of work doesn’t mean you have the right to speak to anyone that way, much less your spouse. Honestly, he was trying to help. You don’t have to snap his head off the one time he says something. Unless you’re a Praying Mantis, in which case that is totally acceptable.

Karen: This couple has a long road ahead of them since they work together and live together.

Zombie: It’s not the easiest road to travel but it is possible. Though if they start snapping each other’s heads off, that’s not going to make life easy for anyone.

Tanya: I feel a little sorry for Im Yong Kyu having to be Chang Min’s substitute for the date with Han Ah Reum… And then my feels were ruined by his creeper almost-kiss. It would have been one thing if he was dating her, but why would you kiss a sleeping person you aren’t dating?!

 creeper kiss

Karen: Yes, that was creepy! If that was his daydream, I would have been okay with it. I did feel bad for Yong Kyu because Chang Min knew Yong Kyu’s feelings and Chang Min gave Yong Kyu the concert tickets knowing that Yong Kyu would be a back-up date. That is so rude of Chang Min because Han Ah Reum invited Chang Min and not Yong Kyu.

Zombie: I guess I’m the only one who doesn’t feel bad for Yong Kyu. Sure, Ah Reum isn’t all that interested in him at the moment but she doesn’t hate him and they seem to get along pretty well so he’s off to a good start. I might have felt sorry for him if Chang Min had any feelings for Ah Reum but it’s pretty obvious he doesn’t so I’m not feeling any sympathy for Yong Kyu. Plus, both Ah Reum and Yong Kyu seemed to be having a good time at the concert, despite the fact Yong Kyu was there as a Chang Min substitute so again, no sympathy here. However, if Ah Reum totally ditches Yong Kyu at the concert, once she realizes Chang Min is there, then I might have to feel sorry for him. Until then, I think he’s doing alright on his own so I’ll just give him a hardy “Fighting!” for now and move on.

Karen: I like that Yong Kyu knows what he wants and pursues it…or that person.

Zombie: I really like him as a character (which is nice considering I spent the entire run of Monstar hating Yoon Jong Hoon’s character’s guts).

Tanya: I think that his character is good this time around…. but you know who isn’t? Jin Hee’s sister, Jin Ae. I’ve already had enough of her crap and she was just introduced. How do you steal someone’s stuff to sell for money and then call and demand money because what you stole wasn’t enough? The audacity, really… Grow up.

 send me money

Karen: Jin Ae is outrageous! Seriously, she is a grown woman and should be able to take care of herself. She has arms, legs, and good health. There is no reason for her to become a thief and use family relations to her advantage. Besides, Jin Hee worked very hard just to become a doctor, but that doesn’t mean Jin Hee has free money for the taking.

Tanya: Even if she thought Jin Hee didn’t NEED the ring anymore, Jin Hee obviously wanted to keep it. It wasn’t hers to sell and it was just a bad move.

Zombie: Once again we’re met with an utterly ridiculous character and are expected to just accept all of her crazy as normal.

Tanya: FALSE. These characters, really. I just can’t.

Karen: She’s not normal!

Zombie: I was really hoping Jin Ae would be a character I could love, the previews of last week made her seem like such a kindred spirit (Rock ‘n Roll!) but sadly, this is not to be. I cannot get behind a selfish, spoiled brat who demands her sister pay for her whims simply because she can’t. Grow up and get a job! (Geeze, I sound old now!)

Karen: On the other hand, why did Jin Ae’s family not look for her? That didn’t make sense to me.

Tanya: Once again: back story. WE NEED BACK STORY! (Think they heard me?) Also, Jin Ae is supposed to be what, 29 years old? So 28 years old in Western years… that would still make her older than me and that level of ridiculous is…. well, ridiculous.

 rock is my life

Zombie: If you’re going to leave home as a rebel (as I’m assuming Jin Ae did since she’s the walking personification of the rebellious Rock spirit) you’re probably not going to keep in touch with your family. Even if she was never very far away, I’m pretty sure Jin Ae did all she could to stay as far out of touch with her mom and sister as possible.

Tanya: That’s what I did when I went through my rebellion stage. I was there. I just didn’t want to talk to anyone. I still wouldn’t have stolen from anyone, and if I did, it wouldn’t have been my family. Yeah, that still doesn’t sound good.

Karen: So Jin Ae is more despicable than most. I feel like she has a back story as well and her family seemed to have ignored her. It doesn’t justify what she did, but perhaps she couldn’t handle her life anymore because of it.

We’re all in agreement that we need the back story for these characters. How did you feel about this week’s episodes? What do you think will happen between Dr. Gook and Dr. Shim? Will Jin Hee continued to be trampled on by her former mother-in-law? Will Chang Min ever stop being the eternal mama’s boy? Are you ready to take off your doctor's coat

Welcome back to Karen’s portion of the Hallyu Zombie Emergency Couple Drama Review, episode five and six. This week, Tanya started us off with some ridiculous situations. I found this week’s episodes really interesting, but I found Oh Jin Hee’s (Song Ji Hyo’s) honest and true excuse to be a doctor disappointing and unbelievable.

Oh Jin Hee - I don't have the right skill or attitude to be a doctor

I can’t believe Oh Jin Hee’s real reason to become a doctor is to experience what it’s like to be a doctor because a doctor is somebody special and she’s a nobody. At first, I thought she was joking when she told her ex-mother-in-law, Yoon Sung Sook (Park Joon Geum) her reasons, but then, when she repeated the reasons of her true intentions to Dr. Gook Chun Soo (Lee Pil Mo), I was devastated. Jin Hee’s motivations are so shallow. Surely, I don’t believe it. If that was true, she wouldn’t do all she could to help her patients. She could have merely sit back, watch the show, and let her ex-husband and fellow intern, Oh Chang Min (Choi Jin Hyuk), handle the mess of a patient’s death. All those sticky notes she had in her medical book and all the effort she put in to become a doctor is way too much effort to make me believe she simply wanted to be a doctor, but not play the part. Then, Zombie Mamma, Tanya, and I could have been doctors too, though who knows if we can all get through some medical books and still retain all the knowledge that one needs to become a doctor. I know for sure that my eyes will glaze over. I’m just trying to prove that it takes more than a mere effort to become a doctor and I believe Jin Hee got this far because she is interested in becoming a doctor and saving lives.

Gook Chun Soo - If you have time for this, go out there and see one more patient

Dr. Gook’s wise response was really touching to me. In fact, I respect his honest response to Jin Hee’s confession, which sums up my feelings as well:

Then did everyone become a doctor to cure sick people and save the world like Jesus? Are you saying that only the people with the right intentions can become doctors? Are you saying that their intentions are never swayed by their lives? That kind of perfect idealism doesn’t exist.

Professor Ahn - Then let's make sure that the tracheotomy was performed by Oh Jin Hee

Meanwhile, contrary to what I said in my first Emergency Couple review, there are politics in the hospital after all when Jin Hee is the one to be dismissed for the death of a patient while Chang Min’s job position remains safe. We can’t escape the political madness in every hospital drama!

Im Yong Kyu - There is definitely a mysterious world that we don't know about

Honestly, with all these clues becoming obvious that Jin Hee and Chang Min have some type of relationship that goes beyond one of colleagues, Dr. Gook is still questioning everything. Even their fellow interns already speculated Jin Hee’s and Chang Min’s mysterious relationship and it’s only a matter of time before they all figure it out.

Oh Chang Min - I told you to stop

Chang Min needs to step up as a man. He still disappoints me very much when he doubted that Jin Hee might harm his mother when Jin Hee went into the VIP room and when he failed to stick up for Jin Hee in front of his mother. Yet, if he didn’t care about Jin Hee, he wouldn’t have lied about performing the tracheotomy only to lose his job, which he spent many years pursuing. I really can’t root for him too much.

Yoon Sung Sook - I haven't accomplished any of my goals yet

Chang Min’s mother, Yoon Sung Sook, should have became a doctor herself if she’s so obsessed with doctors. Honestly, she needs to get her priorities straight. Being rich does not automatically bring happiness. Why is she pursuing such unrealistic goals? She wants a high society-ranking woman like “Jessica” Han Ah Reum (Clara) to become her daughter-in-law and she wants Chang Min and Han Ah Reum to represent her pride as doctors in order to match up with the rest of her family. She even knew that her rich sisters didn’t visit her after she collapsed in the hospital and that the joke is on her when her former daughter-in-law, Jin Hee, became a doctor. As a bonus, Jin Hee thoughtfully saved Sung Sook’s life. Furthermore, because of her schemes, Sung Sook already lost her husband’s heart. He didn’t bother to visit her at the hospital either.

Oh Jin Ae - It won't be damaged much even if I live this way

This week, another new character is revealed and she is Oh Jin Ae (Jun Soo Jin), Jin Hee’s sister. She is really rude, but also ignored by the family. I don’t know whether to scold her or to feel pity for her. Initially, I was really mad at her for stealing her sister’s wedding ring and pawning it for a guitar. Honestly, since Jin Hee says that Jin Ae is older than Han Ah Reum, Jin Ae should be old enough to get her own job to support herself. She’s not a teenager, but it’s because she is still dependent on her sister that there is still hope that the family can reunite again. Jin Ae seemed to be the forgotten child. What took so long for Jin Hee to find Jin Ae anyway when Jin Hee could have just made a couple of phone calls at any time to check on Jin Ae’s whereabouts? Or is Jin Hee giving her sister some space?

Dari - Who's Gary I'm Dari Dari - No we shouldn't I'm God's substitute driver

Lastly, it’s cameo hunting time. Dubbed the “Monday Couple” from the ever-popular Running Man variety show due to their hinted relationship, Gary, who is one-half of the hip-hop duo, Leessang, reunites with his Running Man teammate, Song Ji Hyo, in episode six of Emergency Couple. In her drunken state, Jin Hee mistakes Gary for Gary while showing him her godly hands, but Gary assures her that he is Dari, God’s substitute driver who is hired by Dr. Gook to escort her home. Dari has a feeling he will see her again on Monday because why? Because, they are the Monday Couple on Running Man, of course!

HALLYU ZOMBIE DRAMA REVIEW: Emergency Couple Episodes 5-6 (1/4)

Hello everyone! I spent most of this week’s episodes being super annoyed by the ridiculous situations the drama brought forward, so let’s recap!

Chang Min is still in over-protective mode and insists to Dr. Gook’s face that he’s the one that performed the surgery even though Gook knows he didn’t. I understand Chang Min doesn’t want Jin Hee to get in trouble because there will be an inquiry into the death, but I don’t know many who would sacrifice their career for someone they don’t even get along with.

Later, “the intern who performed the tracheotomy” is called into the review board’s conference and both Chang Min and Jin Hee show up, however only Chang Min has the guts to walk up to the podium and say he did it. Jin Hee cowers in the walkway until Chang Min starts taking questions from the other doctors. At the point she speaks up, she makes both herself and Chang Min look like idiots because one of them obviously has to be lying. You could tell by the look on Dr. Gook’s face even he thought she should have just kept her mouth shut at that point.

Our lovey dovey couple was at odds with one another as situations in the ER became tense. Honestly though, I think Sang Hyuk had every right to get annoyed with [his wife] Young Ae. She’s in there venting and then gets frustrated because she dropped something. He’s trying to help her out by picking it up and she just keeps going off and he finally speaks up in defense of himself. They way she asks if he’s annoyed is more like, “How dare you speak up against me” and I am unhappy with that. I know there is usually a stronger personality in a relationship, but they just got married… There should be more equality present.

We are then greeted by the Chang Min’s mother who took pills, seemingly on purpose, so she could herself into the hospital that he is working at. Jin Hee is assigned to work with her and is mistreated of course. Mother requests that Jessica (aka Han Ah Reum) be her attending intern instead and pulls strings to get her way, to the annoyance of Dr. Gook. It is an obvious ploy to work on getting Chang Min and Ah Reum together.

In the end, however, Jin Hee comes through and ends up saving her life because she puts an EKG on her after remembering she had previous heart failure. Again, the mother treats Jin Hee like she is worthless and continues her tantrum.

Lastly, we are introduced to one more issue: Jin Ae. This girl freely comes into Jin Hee’s home, steals her stuff and sells it for money, then demands her sister send her more money because what she stole was worthless. I would have put the smack down… It’s ridiculous.

Zombie: So I just have to ask, last week we weren’t so sure we were going to like this drama, have any of us changed our minds now that we’re four episodes in?

Karen: I think my overall reactions are still positive. I do miss a lot of the medical drama though because that’s what gets my heart pumping.

Hallyu Zombie Drama Review: Emergency Couple Episodes 3-4 (3/4)

Welcome to Part 3 of Hallyu Zombie Drama Review for Emergency Couple Episodes 3-4! I find it funny that Karen, ZombieMamma, and I are all seeing pretty eye-to-eye on this drama so far. Since they have both done awesome recaps, I want to focus a little more on my personal opinions here.

I’m honestly finding this drama too easy. We have established that pretty much every relationship in this show is flawed or broken, and it’s completely true. However, it’s too easy… and conflict free. For example, our main characters Chang Min and Jin Hee hated each other in episodes 1-2. By episode 3, that hatred is wavering…. and in episode 4, it seems to be completely non-existent like it was never a thing to begin with. You don’t forgive someone in that short amount of time, no matter what nice things they have done for you. You certainly don’t forget what happened in the past that quickly.

I understand that relationships can move on and mend, but not realistically in the time period that this drama has set. Yes, you can have concern for others, even those you don’t like, but this over-protective vibe is a little extreme for this early in the series.

And no, that doesn’t mean that I don’t want them to end up together. It is very clear they should, but were not at a place in their lives to do it when they were younger. So fighting!

Lastly, the medical aspect of this drama is ridiculous. Karen mentions the conflict in what interns actually do and we talked about it. The standard definition of interns is those working at a hospital as part of their academic curriculum. They wouldn’t be called doctor, nor would they do any tasks beyond basic blood draws and assisting. There was a side note that some countries also refer to first years residents as interns, meaning they have graduated but need practical experience. I am seriously hoping the later is the case for this show, otherwise we have some very uneducated people performing serious tasks.

Even without all that business, patience aren’t being cared for properly. As ZombieMamma said, where did “psycho ahjussi” just disappear to? There were probably others to care for him since we see a lot of other doctors and nurses in the background often, but not all of those interns would have rushed to Chang Min and been able to stay with him. Doctors would have given them instructions to help with the suicidal patient and the cop that had been shot.

This shouldn’t have been billed as a medical drama, but rather a drama that takes place in a hospital. They only use the setting to create situations of conflict between the characters, it isn’t actually about what is taking place in the hospital.

All negativity aside, I’m optimistic that this drama will be a decent on in the end. There seems to be conviction to have real resolution between the characters and, as we already know, I hate open-ended stories! Give me an actual ending please!

HALLYU ZOMBIE DRAMA REVIEW: Emergency Couple Episodes 3-4 (2/4)

What started out last week as a tumultuous drama I wasn’t sure I’d be able to get behind, has morphed, this week, into a drama to which  I am now completely addicted. So what happened in this week’s episodes of Emergency Couple that changed my tune? Well, let’s dig into them and find out!

Oh Chang Min and Oh Jin Hee look at each other

Welcome back to the Emergency Couple review, episodes three and four with Karen, who is reviewing Emergency Couple each week with Zombie Mamma and Tanya. If last week’s introductory episodes were incredulous, then this week’s episodes are bound to be more interesting because of additional background information on our main characters. Unfortunately, there are still some ridiculous plot lines that bother me.

Chang Min

Last week’s episodes ended with Oh Jin Hee (Song Ji Hyo) shocking a suicidal patient and her ex-husband and intern colleague, Oh Chang Min (Choi Jin Hyuk). Immediately afterwards, almost all medical personnel rushed to Oh Chang Min’s side. What about the suicidal patient? He was never seen again nor did I see anybody treat him. I thought it didn’t make sense to focus all the energy on Chang Min and not the other patient. Even the patient who was accidentally shot by the suicidal patient had more screen time than the actual suicidal patient. Was the suicidal patient’s life not as important as the other patients? I had unresolved feelings about that mini story. In fact, the nurse said the drunkard, suicidal patient was discharged afterwards. Shouldn’t he go to the police station?

Oh Chang Min - Why did you set this up on your own

Once again, I have my doubts about what intern life is really about at the hospital. From what I learned from the drama, interns are lucky if they even have one hour for lunch because they never know when an emergency can happen and they are summoned. How much sense does it make to leave the hospital to go out for lunch and on top of that, a blind date? Even worse, Oh Chang Min’s blind date was supposed to be fellow intern, Han Ah Reum (Clara). Chang Min is so obedient towards his mother that he didn’t have any common sense. Is it that hard to change the blind date to an evening time after interns get off of work? Profession aside, a lunch date isn’t really enough time to get to know somebody anyway. Han Ah Reum’s family should have known that it would be quite impossible for Han Ah Reum to go to this lunch date when she is an intern at a hospital. The lunch date was doomed to fail from the beginning.

Gook Chun Soo - What's strict Are you going to keep eating when someone's dying

I really like Dr. Gook’s (Lee Pil Mo) response to an intern taking lunch during an emergency. Even with his buried pain, he’s becoming quite the comical character from his expressions to his view on hospital life.

Jung Joo Ri - Leonardo DiCaprio who sketched this

Actress and comedian Jung Joo Ri has a few cameo scenes as the person who attends the blind date in Han Ah Reum’s place. The way Jung Joo Ri looks at art is basically how I look at art. She mistakes the artist’s name (but, thankfully corrects herself) and criticizes the man’s hairstyle in Leonardo da Vinci’s famous drawing of the “Vitruvian Man.”

Han Ah Reum - How can this happen in Korea

In a way, I love that Han Ah Reum is from the United States or at least has a western mentality. I get to see how she reacts to Korean culture. Foreigners such as I would learn a lesson or two about how to assimilate into Korean culture.

Oh Jin Hee - In Korea if the age gap is more than 5 years

I am intrigued by what Oh Jin Hee said about referring to others who are more than five years in age difference by name. My Korean husband, however, says it really depends on the situation, but either way, I would feel more comfortable referring to my colleagues by surname if I were working in a hospital.

Han Ah Reum - No makeup on the face with unkempt hair

On the other hand, I feel that Han Ah Reum is so rude. I hope her behavior doesn’t reflect badly on all Americans. I would never make fun of other people’s age and their insecurities. The way she bullied Oh Jin Hee was such a turn-off to me that I hope Chang Min never falls in love with her.

Oh Tae Suk - They could have had a happy life together if you just let them

On a positive note, I have a better understanding on why Oh Jin Hee became a doctor. She has been supported by Oh Chang Min’s father, Oh Tae Suk, all along. I believe Oh Tae Suk had been burdened by the guilt of his wife separating Oh Chang Min’s marriage to Oh Jin Hee so Oh Tae Suk decided to secretly support Oh Jin Hee’s path to become a doctor. I find Oh Tae Suk and Oh Jin Hee’s relationship very sweet even though they can no longer meet due to the awkwardness of their relationship. Perhaps Chang Min’s father will take the Vice-Director job at the hospital after he learns of Jin Hee and Chang Min’s fateful working relationship.

Yoon Sung Suk Oh Tae Suk fight

On a side note, the way Chang Min’s parents fight seems to be way more vicious than Chang Min and Jin Hee’s martial fight, yet Chang Min’s parents are not divorced.

Oh Chang Min - So if there is any problem I'll take responsibility

Lastly, I will talk about the Emergency Couple love gauge. Finally, the drama gives me what I want when Oh Chang Min shows a bit of concern for Oh Jin Hee when they found out that their patient, whom they performed tracheotomy on, had died. As they both tried to take the blame, Oh Chang Min was more forceful in protecting Oh Jin Hee, but I will have to wait until next week’s episode to find out what exactly will happen. Previously, Chang Min hated Jin Hee so much that he would rather be shot by the suicidal patient than be saved by Jin Hee. Will protection turn into love again?

Zombie: So it seems we’re all in agreement that the first episode of Emergency Couple wasn’t nearly as awesome as maybe we were all hoping it would be. Maybe it’s because we’re all married that we don’t find a hugely gianormous fight between our OTP all that funny; especially when said fight brings about the end of a marriage.

HALLYU ZOMBIE DRAMA REVIEW: Emergency Couple Episodes 1-2 (3/4)

Emergency Couple

Welcome to the Emergency Couple review with Zombie Mamma, Tanya, and Karen. My name is Karen and for the next ten weeks, my partners and I will be sharing our thoughts on the newest episodes of Emergency Couple. Our thoughts will be simultaneously and exclusively posted on each of our blogs: Zombie MammaHallyu Know?, and Wehaiyo! You can find our latest updates on either of these blogs. All three of us are Dramafever Drama club reviewers for the Dramafever website, but decided that we would review this drama independently.

Oh Chang Min Oh Jin Hee at the wedding

What I am anticipating in the Emergency Couple drama is the chemistry between actor Choi Jin Hyuk, who plays Oh Chang Min and Song Ji Hyo, who plays Oh Jin Hee. When I first heard of the story line for Emergency Couple, it sounded very similar to the story line of the 2011 SBS drama, Paradise Ranch. The two main characters of Paradise Ranch are played by Shim Chang Min, who is most famous for being one half of the TVXQ band and actress Lee Yeon Hee. Their characters married young against their parents wishes, but divorced soon after. Years later, they meet again and fall back in love by the end of the drama. Paradise Ranch was the first full drama I watched on the Dramafever website, but the story line left me so disappointmented and worse, I felt that there wasn’t enough chemistry between Chang Min and Lee Yeon Hee. I sincerely hope that Emergency Couple does not fall into this trap. I can deal with a bad story line, but I don’t think I can handle another chemistry-lacking couple.

Oh Chang Min - How can you do this to me

Emergency Couple is the third Korean medical drama I am watching. I have watched the 2007-2008 MBC drama, New Heart, which focuses heavily on the medical part and I have watched the 2013 KBS2 drama, Good Doctor, which has an equal dose of medical and love in the drama. By the way, if you haven’t already, I have reviewed all episodes of Good Doctor for Dramafever so feel free to browse through those reviews as well. So far, Emergency Couple seems to be the type of drama that focuses more on love than the medical part. We don’t get any political bickering at the hospital as seen in Good Doctor and there is no hint of any staff member who has familial ties to any hospital administration executive as seen in New Heart.

Oh Chang Min - She threw urine on this handsome face

Still, with a third medical drama under my belt, I should be more familiar about how a hospital works, but I don’t. I am still very surprised at what an intern life was about. How are interns different from resident doctors? I notice that all interns go to work and leave at the same time. I wonder if the residents take over after the interns go home. Why didn’t they go home in shifts like residents do? I understand the interns of team four are assigned to the emergency room for three months, but what are the other departments? I would have liked to know the name of the other departments. I was also extremely surprised when Oh Jin Hee poured a bag of a patient’s urine on top of Oh Chang Min’s head, exposing him to contamination. I work in a medical-related field so I know that this is definitely a very dangerous thing to do. Who knows if the patient had any kind of infection and the urine actually got into Chang Min’s eyes. He would need to go to an eye washing station and report the incident to his supervisor immediately as well as get medical treatment as needed. Jin Hee would have lost her job immediately as she did it on purpose and Chang Min would have to deal with the medical consequences. This is never something to ever joke around with because everyone has a right to be safe at the workplace. Chang Min could not simply go to the bathroom and “wash it off.” I am very bothered by that scene as it was a reckless move by interns who should know better.

Han Ah Reum - I really hate the bullying culture in Korea

On a related note, I am disappointed that, like the plot of Good Doctor, there is bullying going on in this drama as well. Jin Hee’s first day was not only tough because of her mistakes from the previous night, but because all her team members wanted her to quit the hospital because she looked old and unreliable. I have low tolerance for people who judge other people without spending the time to understand the other person. Even the chief, Gook Chun Soo (Lee Pil Mo), tried to fire Jin Hee on the first day without giving her a chance to work. On that note, I felt sad for Jin Hee, especially after she removed her medical diplomas and placed them in her desk drawer instead. What a way to knock someone down. On the other hand, why couldn’t she tell Chief Gook the reason why she wanted to be a doctor? That’s really suspicious. In a way, I am not sure if she should quit or not quit because of that hesitation.

Oh Chang Min Oh Jin Hee look at the mess

So far, I cannot take sides on this love drama war. Chang Min and Jin Hee equally annoyed me and I don’t see a reason to take either side. Jin Hee seems to be such a weak character who is physically and emotionally influenced easily. Chang Min’s words are so poisonous and his character is very selfish. As a married woman, I found their famous fight scene so dramatic. No matter how angry I am, I would not take my anger out on such expensive items. I guess they didn’t show Chang Min and Jin Hee hitting each other because otherwise, the audience would be too shocked and uncomfortable with domestic violence. From what I see, both sides have their faults and I wonder how they will fall back in love within one year at the hospital. I expected Jin Hee to be more competent as an intern since she obviously worked hard to get where she is, but she messed up a simple thing like a blood draw, making me lose some of my faith in her abilities.

Oh Chang Min - How did you know I was in the hospital

Those suffering from an Heirs drama withdrawal will experience a bit of deja vu because actress Park Joon Geum is playing Choi Jin Hyuk’s mother again, only this time she is his real mother and Jin Hyuk seems to be a mama’s boy.

Yoon Joo Sang - Kids these days call it a mental collapse

Yoon Joo Sang, who I will always affectionately remember as Shin Sang Duk from the 2013 SBS drama, I Hear Your Voice, makes a cameo appearance as Chang Min and Jin Hee’s wedding officiant. Actress Jun Soo Kyung also makes an appearance as a hospital director who flirts with Chang Min.

Oh Jin Hee shocks the patient and Oh Chang Min

Since we ended with a ridiculous plot line where a suicidal patient had easy access to a security guard patient’s gun, Jin Hee shocked the suicidal patient and Chang Min with a defibrillator, which was a bit comical because I don’t know if her facial expression at the time meant that she enjoyed it or not. I think, at this point, I can’t take the medical part too seriously so I better enjoy the romantic comedy parts and that’s exactly what I signed up for.

Look for our upcoming collaborative chat about episodes one and two soon, exclusively on our blogs.
