If you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time, you’ll know that I’ve had a thing for CNBLUE for a very long time. Jung Yong Hwa was the bunny I happily followed down the rabbit hole that led me into the wonderful world of all things Hallyu, CNBLUE’s albums were the first K-Pop albums I ever bought and the boys of CNBLUE will forever be at the top of my bias list. That being said, it only makes sense that their latest release, “Can’t Stop” would win this week’s music spotlight.
This week brought with it the end of KBS2’s most recent time-traveling drama, Marry Him If You Dare. As I’ve spent the past eight weeks writing reviews on each week’s episodes for DramaFever, I’d think myself a slacker if I didn’t recommend Marry Him If You Dare for your weekly dose of drama.
Starring Yoon Eun Hye, Lee Dong Gun and Jung Yong Hwa (swoon), Marry Him If You Dare tells the story of the time-traveling Na Mi Rae, a young call center employee who is surprised by a visit from her very disgruntled future self. Desperate to change her fate, the Mi Rae of the future braves all sorts of peril to travel back in time, in hopes of changing the past and therefore her future. What the future Na Mi Rae doesn’t know is that once she starts changing the past, there’s no telling what will happen to her future.
I could go in to all kinds of details about the characters and plot in this drama but I don’t want to ruin the suspense for those of you who are planning to watch it for the first time. (Well, that and I’ve already thoroughly dissected this drama for DramaFever’s Marry Him If You Dare Drama Club which you can read whenever you feel so inclined.) However, I will tell you that having the chance to watch Yoon Eun Hye and Jung Yong Hwa in the same drama is 
pretty darn awesome. I’ve been a fan of Yoon Eun Hye since I first saw her in Lie to Me and (if you couldn’t already tell) Jung Yong Hwa is one of my biggest biases. That being said, I started watching Marry Him If You Dare just because I was curious to see how two of my favorite actors would interact on-screen and my fangirl side was intrigued enough to watch this drama through to the end.
As much as I would like to say Marry Him If You Dare is one of my favorite dramas, the truth is, it’s not. Once you start watching, you’ll understand why. It’s not that the show is bad (though the 4.1% viewer rating it garnered with its last two episodes might suggest otherwise) it’s just missing that something special that endears dramas to their viewers. Still, there are some lessons to be learned from Mi Rae’s antics and an underlying challenge to follow your dreams and find the courage to change your stars, which I really liked. Ultimately, that’s why I encourage you to make Marry Him If You Dare your weekend marathon. Last week I introduced you to one of my favorite Japanese bands, ONE OK ROCK, and one of my all-time favorite K-dramas, You’re Beautiful. If you took the time to watch any of You’re Beautiful, you probably spent the last week with songs from the show stuck in your head and if you’re at all like me, you’re now wondering where you can find A.N.Jell’s album. Unfortunately, A.N.Jell only exists in K-dramaLand *waaah!* but the three talented actors that make up A.N.Jell are also musicians which means you can get your fill of Jang Geun Suk (aka Hwang Tae Kyung), Lee Hong Ki (Jeremy) and Jung Yong Hwa (Kang Shin Woo) without having to watch episodes of You’re Beautiful every day for the rest of your life. *Hooray!* While I’d love to introduce you to the work of all three of these amazing artists at once, I feel like I would be gipping them of their time in my relatively small spotlight, so this week I’m going to focus on just one and that would be Jung Yong Hwa’s rock/pop/alternative band CNBLUE.
CNBLUE debuted in Japan in 2009 with their first mini-album Now or Never and released their first Korean mini-album, Bluetory, in 2010. Since then, CNBLUE has released several albums and mini-albums in both Korea and Japan, all of which have met with incredible success. The band spent a good portion of this year on their Blue Moon World Tour while somehow managing to find time for both Kang Min Hyuk and Jung Yong Hwa to film for upcoming K-dramas. Kang Min Hyuk is currently starring in SBS’s newest drama Heirs (which you can watch here http://www.dramafever.com/drama/4274/Heirs/) and Jung Yong Hwa’s newest drama Mi Rae’s Choice (aka Marry Him If You Dare) is scheduled to release next week. How these guys find time to release new albums, tour and act is beyond me but they do and we love them for it, which brings me to our drama of the week but first, check out these videos from CNBLUE…
If last week’s drama and this week’s band wasn’t enough to get you hooked on Jung Yong Hwa, this week’s drama should do the trick. Starring Jung Yong Hwa, Park Shin Hye and Kang Min Hyuk (to name a few) Heartstrings follows the story of two college music majors, one majoring in modern music and the other traditional, and the sparks that fly when the two go head-to-head to prove which musical style is best. Being a fan of Jung Yong Hwa, Park Shin Hye and music in general, this rom-com is one of my favorites as it’s another drama full of great music and that classic love-hate relationship of which I can never seem to get enough.
