Hallyu Zombie Drama Review: Bride of the Century Episodes 5-6 (1/2)

Shai here! It’s a new week and that means 2 more episodes of Bride of the Century have aired! *Does happy dance*…too much? Okay then I’ll quietly spazz in my corner.
Enough with the intro because I have way too much to talk about in this week’s review and I don’t even know where to start. Hmm…maybe where my mind keeps going back to and that’s both mothers having no problem with sacrificing an innocent life. Should I start here? Yeah, I should.

Well I have always been suspicious of Kang Ju’s mother, Myung Hee, and we find out (not that anyone should be surprised) that she is indeed using Yi Kyung as the sacrificial lamb so she can bring in Roo Mi as Kang Ju’s wife. Even though we’ve been thinking this, it’s been confirmed this was her true intention from the start and now I can see why her husband is seems disinterested in her. At first I felt bad for her being in a loveless marriage, but now that we know she was the one her mother-in-law wanted Il Do to marry her actions mean so much more. It kinda sucks for him because he’s just now figuring all of this out and it’s vey obvious he doesn’t want the same for his son. Myung Hee, on the other hand, doesn’t mind if someone like Jang Yi Kyung dies as long as she has her protege in Roo Mi to become the “true” wife to her son ya’know since the first one doesn’t count.

This brings me to Jae Ran, Yi Kyung’s mom, who we know has planned for Doo Rim to take Yi Kyung’s place as Kang Ju’s first wife. Since she knows all about the Choi family curse, she is aware of what Myung Hee is planning and is rightfully upset about it. Who would want their daughter to be the martyr in order for that son to marry the woman his mother really wants him to be with? My only gripe with her plan is that she’s doing the same thing with Doo Rim, sacrificing her to save her daughter. I was on board until she said she doesn’t care if this comes at the cost of a life i.e. Na Doo Rim. My poor Doo Rim is a sacrificial lamb for the rich *sobs* But wait! Don’t we have Sung Joo Shin aka Ghost Lady helping our leading lady?

Evil Ghost Lady
We discussed this last week, it’s hard to get a reading on her because it seems she has 2 personalities: Good and Evil, when she wears black and white. She appeared before the shaman and Yi Kyung wearing black, but shows up in front of Doo Rim wearing white. I realized something we may have missed while watching episode 6, Joo Shin always appears in front of Doo Rim in human form while anyone else she shows up as a ghost…no matter which persona she chooses to take on. It’s obvious her goal isn’t to scare her, but why? Why scare others, but not Doo Rim?
Seemingly good Ghost Lady
As a matter of fact, she didn’t scare Kang Ju either since he seemed to be expecting her appearance soon. As she told Doo Rim on the beach, she doesn’t know why she’s doing anything for her. Was she simply saying that or was she serious? Does Joo Shin really not understand why she’s playing cupid to our OTP? All these questions will be answered in due time…by the drama.
Roo Mi really isn’t giving up on her dear Kang Ju oppa
Now that I got all that out of the way, can I just say how much I want to push Roo Mi off of a cliff? Too soon? Darn. But I do dislike her and cringe when she gets more screen time than I would like from her. She pretty much got a confirmation about the family curse from Mrs. Ahn after she bribed her and now she understands what Myung Hee meant with her fork analogy, honestly it took her long enough to get it. Her emotions get the best of her and she’ll start cracking.
Can I please know what motor mouth ahjumma said?
Can I rant about her for a minute? She’s been so close with Kang Ju for years and chose to stay by his side all this time, but never once thought about the idea that perhaps he didn’t feel the same way. Even if he didn’t care about “Yi Kyung” (Doo Rim), he still wouldn’t want her. Let’s say Kang Ju does marry Yi Kyung, she dies and Roo Mi becomes the second wife, does she really want that kind of life? Il Do doesn’t even care about Myung Hee in that way so is she prepared to be miserable for the rest of her life? From her actions, I guess she is. Roo Mi doesn’t deserve Kang Ju and she knows it especially now that he’s made a change for the better.

Isn’t Yi Kyung surprised to know that Kang Ju has possibly fallen for Doo Rim? She came back at that right moment to see how he’s changed and she’s not too happy to know that her double is responsible for it. Ooh, I just love this! She couldn’t pinpoint what was so different about him at dinner, but the moment he ran out when he thought she was hurt made light bulbs go off in her head: Kang Ju is in love with Doo Rim who he thinks is her. He’s just your average guy worried about his fiance, no biggie or is it a biggie now that the hearts of 2 people are at stake? Hmm…drama what do you have in store for us next?

I have a question for you dear readers, what do you think is Ghost Lady’s real angle? I had more to say, but I’ll leave that to our chat tomorrow!

HALLYU ZOMBIE DRAMA REVIEW: Bride of the Century Episodes 1-2 (2/2)

bwahahaZombie: I just have to ask, are you two loving Bride of the Century as much as I am because really, I’m freakin’ loving this show!!!

Tanya: I love the unexpected bits of comedy thrown into the darkness of this slightly creepy drama. It’s like they took My Love From Another Star and The Master’s Sun and rolled them together. I like it.

HALLYU ZOMBIE DRAMA REVIEW: Bride of the Century Episodes 1-2 (1/2)

Annyeong chingus and welcome to yet another edition of “Hallyu Zombie Drama Review!” I’m super excited to introduce this particular review to you for two reasons… First, because  this drama is one I’ve been dying to watch for months and this week it has FINALLY started to air (squee!) and second, because two amazing ladies have agreed to join me on this particular drama reviewing endeavor. They are none other than Shai from k-dramacentral and Tanya from HallyuKnow? *round of applause* You can find all three of us writing for our individual blogs as well as writing for some of DramaFever’s more recent Drama Clubs. *hooray!* And now that the introductions are over, let’s dig into these first two episodes, shall we?

HALLYU ZOMBIE DRAMA REVIEW: Emergency Couple Episodes 8-9 (4/4)

hmmmm

Tanya: Okay, so I know I’m skipping ahead a LOT, but I don’t feel that Jin Ae is as awful as we all first thought. Definitely not a model citizen, needs improvement, but not the family-abandoning woman they made her out to be for a few episodes.

jin ae hiding

Zombie: I’m still not the biggest fan of Jin Ae but at least now we know that she genuinely cares for her husband and baby, if not really her mom and sister. That’s a plus in its own right but it only scores her a few measly points in my book.

Karen: Jin Ae definitely has room for improvement in my book. She may be a caring mother and wife, but she still needs to work out her issues with her immediate family.

Tanya: She apparently has a high enough opinion of her mom and sister that she was willing to send her husband and child to them because she knew they would care for them. I’m not a fan of the lying but at least she knows they will help.

poor baby gook

Zombie: It took Jo Yang Ja long enough to warm up Baby Gook. I can understand the hesitancy in accepting Kim Gwang Soo, seeing as how he’s a complete stranger and all but to not have any compassion or feeling for Baby Gook… I just can’t fathom that! He’s so stinking adorable, how could you not love him? He’s a baby and he’s cute, that should make everyone love him, regardless of your relation to him.

Karen: I don’t even know baby Gook and I love him to death! Absolutely! He can come live with me for a while too! I even cried for him this week.

Tanya: Was anyone else disturbed by how real that baby’s responses were? Like they were actually sticking him?! It really upset me actually. There was just something way too real about it. I’m all for authenticity, but if they were really poking that kid I have some producers I need to punch in the face.

Karen: Yes, that scream was so real! I think they used the same sound file though because baby Gook’s screams seem to be identical. Anyway, I wonder what they did to make that scream happen.

Zombie: Maybe Baby Gook is just a natural-born actor… Moving on (because let’s face it, the very idea of that poor baby being poked for the sake of authenticity is just sickening)… Let’s talk about the developing relationship between Jin Hee and Dr. Gook. Are they not totally adorable?

cute couple

Tanya: Yes and no. They are, but at the same time I already feel like it will never go anywhere so I’m not really invested in it. It’s just there to cause more drama… Hah!

Karen: I have this feeling that Dr. Gook may have started liking Jin Hee because of that sly smile in the elevator. I kept asking myself what that smile was all about.

Zombie: Whatever it’s about, I like seeing it. Dr. Gook looks so much better when he smiles! And yes, there is no way any sort of relationship between the two will ever pan out but I enjoy watching them together, in those rare moments when they’re comfortable enough together to put their guard down and simply enjoy each other’s company.

Karen: Do you all think Jin Hee took the jacket back from Dr. Gook or do you think he ended up keeping it?

a present for a sock

Tanya: You know, I’m not sure. Dr. Gook did tell Jin Hee that it was Chang Min, but there was never any visual on the jacket again. It’s probably still sitting in his office.

Zombie: I think that jacket is meant to stir up Chang Min and Dr. Shim’s feelings of jealousy more than anything else. My guess is, Dr. Gook won’t ever actually wear that jacket, unless he decided to put it on, just to rile up Chang Min a little.

when the kid is sick

Tanya: Speaking of Dr. Shim, the phone call from America. Does anyone suspect a secret child happening here? Dr. Gook’s maybe?

Zombie: Oh definitely! I have a theory on this actually, that I wrote about earlier this week, so I won’t go there again but I’m pretty sure there’s a lot more going on with that secret phone call than anyone can possibly imagine.

Karen: Shim Ji Hye and Ji Min? Sounds too close to say that they aren’t related. I really don’t think the child is Dr. Gook’s though, because I don’t see Dr. Shim as the kind of person who would run away from a relationship. She was always so strong and independent.

Zombie: I don’t really see her running away from a relationship but if, perhaps, a relationship was shattered beyond repair… I could see her escaping the fall-out as a sort of self-preservation. Can I really see Dr.s Gook and Shim in such a toxic relationship when they get along so well now? No, but the way this drama has gone, it wouldn’t surprise me if that popped up as part of their mysterious past.

Tanya: I don’t think she would have run away, but more like a she left after the situation and maybe found out later? If they were on iffy terms, I could see hiding it from him.

mysterious past

Karen: Something doesn’t match up for me. Dr. Shim tries to pursue Dr. Gook openly, yet she also holds herself back to give him space so that it wouldn’t be so obvious. I don’t see them having prior ill feelings for one another.

Zombie: That’s part of what has me so confused about them. I can’t decide whether they were ever actually in a relationship or if they have just harbored feelings for each other for all these years without ever acting upon them… I really don’t know.

Tanya: That’s true. I never thought about that, but it’s still suspicious.

Zombie: While we’re on the subject of mysteries, here’s a whopper for you… What in the world is Chang Min going to do to make Jin Hee fall madly in love with him again? I mean, seriously! Up to this point, Jin Hee has been so adamantly against Chang Min in every way possible, I cannot see her falling in love with him all over again. I just can’t! I don’t understand how it’s even possible! Please, does anyone have any idea how this miraculous change is going to come about???

you're not married are you

Karen: Chang Min needs a serious miracle to happen. He has all these obstacles present before he can even start to pursue Jin Hee: Chang Min’s mother, Han Ah Reum, and his job security at the hospital. Even after all that, he hasn’t openly shown Jin Hee that he cares for her at all. He continues to argue with her in front of others. I think he needs to start over again and pretend that they never met before. Start fresh.

Tanya: I… don’t even know. There shouldn’t be any way yet because he hasn’t proven himself to anyone (including us) but DramaLand always provides a path for impossible. That’s going to be what happens here. There isn’t a magical switch in people to make them forget the past. I just don’t see it.

Zombie: I suppose this is part of the reason we keep coming back, week after week… We’re hoping that eventually, all of this crazy madness will finally start to make sense. I mean, at some point, it has to… Right?

Karen: As long as Chang Min and Jin Hee are working together, there will be plenty of chances for them to reconcile.

Zombie: I’m just going to keep telling myself that somewhere, way deep down inside, Chang Min and Jin Hee are still madly in love with each other and all of this time spent together, through all of the ups and downs of life as an ER intern, will be exactly what’s needed to bring them back together in the end.

So now that we’ve shared our thoughts on this week’s happenings, we’d love to hear yours so be sure to leave them in the comments below! Or you can feed Tanya’s addiction to twitter and tweet at us by starting a conversation…

HALLYU ZOMBIE DRAMA REVIEW: Emergency Couple Episodes 8-9 (3/4)

There was a lot of emotions on Emergency Couple in Episodes 8-9. Jealousy and love are flying abound!

After Jin Hee and Dr. Gook save Emma, they go on an informal date. Chang Min sees them as they return to the hospital and is instantly upset the Jin Hee is smiling at Dr. Gook and enjoying spending time with him. They openly showed affection to each other, but Chang Min starts questioning Dr. Gook because of it and that probably isn’t the best idea. Dr. Gook is his supervisor after all.

If the reason for last’s week’s single episode was to improve the quality of Emergency Couple, I think it worked! I laughed more in the two episodes this week than I did in all seven of the episodes that came before. That being said, there’s a lot to talk about this week so let’s get to it!

first grandchildZombie: Alright, so we only had one episode this week but man, what a week it was! Were either of you expecting Jin Ae to have a husband and baby or were you as caught off guard by that as I was?

Karen: I was definitely caught off guard. Jin Ae is very immature, but I would have expected motherhood to change that!

Tanya: I knew there was going to be something huge, but I was NOT expecting a baby, much less a husband to go with it. I know that seems backwards, but she is a little irresponsible…

jin ae

Zombie: A little? We’re talking about the girl who broke into her mother’s house, stole her sister’s wedding ring and SOLD IT to buy a guitar! A guitar! Knowing what we know now (as in, that she has a family to support) if she were that desperate for money, wouldn’t she need to use the money from Jin Hee’s ring to buy diapers or formula or something a bit more important than a guitar?

I have to ask: is anyone else confused by the purple glitter background they have decided to use during the recap in the beginning of each episode? Here they are talking about the doom and gloom of Jin Hee’s struggles and we are met with glitter. It’s contradicting of some of the statements they make during that interlude.

Anyway, back to the actual episode! Jin Hee face plants at the club while chasing her sister and is then surrounded by coworkers. I don’t know if I could deal with that level of embarrassment. To make it worse, the owners are mad, all of them expect an explanation that she doesn’t want to give, and she lies about it! Honestly.

With only one episode of Emergency Couple airing this week, there may not be quite as much to talk about as usual but that doesn’t mean that this week’s episode was uneventful. From softening hearts to a surprise baby, this week’s episode certainly kept us on our toes!

Tanya: So this week we were greeted with a few over-the-top situations. Does anyone else think Chang Min’s mother is a little excessive?

 too many pills

Karen: A little?

Tanya: Sarcasm… She was extremely excessive, for sure.

Karen: She did not have to put her life on the line for anything, yet she did.

Zombie: I was a little confused as to whether or not she was actually trying to commit suicide or just OD enough to get everyone’s attention.

Tanya: Well we already know she’s a drama queen, so attention whore wouldn’t be much more of a stretch.

Karen: There is no way she would try to kill herself. She still has so many goals to accomplish according to her. She needs family respect and Chang Min needs a new, respectable bride!

Zombie: I know you touched on this in your post Karen but if being a doctor is so important in her family, why in the world didn’t she become a doctor herself?

 only cared about your looks

Tanya: She said she married a doctor and Chang Min had to be one because she was too focused on being pretty to become one herself. That totally makes sense, duh…

Zombie: Ummm… I might have to call that one a “fail.” Anyway… I don’t see how she possesses the right to berate Jin Hee, first for not being a doctor and then for becoming one, when she isn’t a doctor herself. I know Sung Sook thinks she’s the most important person on the planet but how does one live without any sense of decency at all?

Tanya: Because she’s poor. Apparently it’s always okay to look down on poor people. She’s just a ridiculous character.

 am i dead

Karen: I agree. I find it strange that her two sisters can become doctors, yet Sung Sook is not or cannot become a doctor. She must have been the black sheep of the family since birth. I think it’s another case of putting one’s dreams upon one’s children.

Zombie: So since she’s the lowest on her family totem pole, she has to belittle everyone below her to make herself feel more important? I suppose that makes sense in her warped mind but to the rest of us, she’s just ridiculous.

Tanya: That’s all the truth. She is the black sheep and she values herself so little that she had to use her husband, who now hates her, and her son to accomplish what she was unable to do herself. It’s really a crappy way to live, honestly. And Chang Min is such a mama’s boy that he will never have the ability to stand up to her.

Zombie: On the upside, watching Jin Hee put up with all of Sung Sook’s nonsense has won her a place in the hearts of both of our leading men. Not like it really matters when it comes to Dr. Gook since we all know she’ll never end up with him but it’s still fun to watch. It’s my favorite part of this drama, so far.

 you two are similar

Karen: I think Dr. Gook likes her already. They are so similar and I bet he knows what Jin Hee is going through.

Zombie: Like I said in my post this week, I think he sees a lot of himself in her and is drawn to that. When you combine that with the way she’s treated at work, the way she’s treated by Sung Sook and the way she behaves at snack shops when she’s drunk, it’s a recipe for instant love. Or at least growing infatuation… Either one works for me. I’m just afraid that Dr. Shim is going to have some serious issues with Jin Hee if she starts stealing Dr. Gook’s attention. Jin Hee’s life could become even more difficult if Dr. Shim is out to get her.

Tanya: I think Jin Hee will be in the clear. Dr. Gook seems more like the older brother type with her than love interest. Either way, some jealousy is going to fly (because romantic comedy that is lacking the comedy part). That’s just how it is in Dramaland.

reminds me of the old days

Karen: Dr. Shim is such a mystery to me. If she loved Dr. Gook or is at least interested in him, why would she go to the United States and then come back later to work with him again? Or is this all a coincidence? Dr. Shim and Dr. Gook are not getting any younger.

Zombie: I wonder if it has something to do with an incident in Dr. Gook’s past that perhaps, is somewhat similar to what has happened with Jin Hee and Chang Min and the death of the cancer patient. Perhaps she was involved in a similar incident with Dr. Gook and left to escape the consequences or perhaps that was one of the consequences???

Tanya: It could be as simple as she left to study further. There was probably an incident, but I don’t necessarily know if she was a part of it. This is why there is so much backstory that we need and aren’t really getting.

Zombie: I think all of us are ready for an episode’s worth of flashbacks, just so we can get some sort of idea of what’s really going on. How can we love these characters when they don’t really make any sense to us? We need to know why they’re doing what they’re doing so we can know whether or not we can really get behind them.

 should i go fishing

Karen: Yes, I don’t believe Dr. Shim would just leave Dr. Gook in a state of distress and go to the United States. Also, why isn’t Dr. Gook an official doctor, but is a resident? Has he been demoted or has he gone fishing too long?

Zombie: I thought something was mentioned about him simply choosing to remain a resident as some sort of self-inflicted penance for something that happened in the past. I’m assuming whatever that was, it’s what sent him off fishing for a year.

Tanya: That’s a long time for fishing, seriously. I love fishing and I couldn’t even imagine… What do you guys feel about lovey Park Sang Hyuk and Lee Young Ae’s first fight?

 are you annoyed at me

crazy eyesZombie: Personally, I find them utterly ridiculous. As for their fight, aren’t most fights between newlyweds pretty ridiculous? I can remember some of mine…

Karen: Why did I see that coming? And for no reason though I thought newlyweds are typically lovey. I guess that doesn’t last too long.

Zombie: Every couple has their moments, even newlyweds but I think we talked about this before… Aren’t they pretty much doomed to teeter on the brink of divorce before Chang Min and Jin Hee step in and save them at the last possible moment?

Tanya: Even the stress of work doesn’t mean you have the right to speak to anyone that way, much less your spouse. Honestly, he was trying to help. You don’t have to snap his head off the one time he says something. Unless you’re a Praying Mantis, in which case that is totally acceptable.

Karen: This couple has a long road ahead of them since they work together and live together.

Zombie: It’s not the easiest road to travel but it is possible. Though if they start snapping each other’s heads off, that’s not going to make life easy for anyone.

Tanya: I feel a little sorry for Im Yong Kyu having to be Chang Min’s substitute for the date with Han Ah Reum… And then my feels were ruined by his creeper almost-kiss. It would have been one thing if he was dating her, but why would you kiss a sleeping person you aren’t dating?!

 creeper kiss

Karen: Yes, that was creepy! If that was his daydream, I would have been okay with it. I did feel bad for Yong Kyu because Chang Min knew Yong Kyu’s feelings and Chang Min gave Yong Kyu the concert tickets knowing that Yong Kyu would be a back-up date. That is so rude of Chang Min because Han Ah Reum invited Chang Min and not Yong Kyu.

Zombie: I guess I’m the only one who doesn’t feel bad for Yong Kyu. Sure, Ah Reum isn’t all that interested in him at the moment but she doesn’t hate him and they seem to get along pretty well so he’s off to a good start. I might have felt sorry for him if Chang Min had any feelings for Ah Reum but it’s pretty obvious he doesn’t so I’m not feeling any sympathy for Yong Kyu. Plus, both Ah Reum and Yong Kyu seemed to be having a good time at the concert, despite the fact Yong Kyu was there as a Chang Min substitute so again, no sympathy here. However, if Ah Reum totally ditches Yong Kyu at the concert, once she realizes Chang Min is there, then I might have to feel sorry for him. Until then, I think he’s doing alright on his own so I’ll just give him a hardy “Fighting!” for now and move on.

Karen: I like that Yong Kyu knows what he wants and pursues it…or that person.

Zombie: I really like him as a character (which is nice considering I spent the entire run of Monstar hating Yoon Jong Hoon’s character’s guts).

Tanya: I think that his character is good this time around…. but you know who isn’t? Jin Hee’s sister, Jin Ae. I’ve already had enough of her crap and she was just introduced. How do you steal someone’s stuff to sell for money and then call and demand money because what you stole wasn’t enough? The audacity, really… Grow up.

 send me money

Karen: Jin Ae is outrageous! Seriously, she is a grown woman and should be able to take care of herself. She has arms, legs, and good health. There is no reason for her to become a thief and use family relations to her advantage. Besides, Jin Hee worked very hard just to become a doctor, but that doesn’t mean Jin Hee has free money for the taking.

Tanya: Even if she thought Jin Hee didn’t NEED the ring anymore, Jin Hee obviously wanted to keep it. It wasn’t hers to sell and it was just a bad move.

Zombie: Once again we’re met with an utterly ridiculous character and are expected to just accept all of her crazy as normal.

Tanya: FALSE. These characters, really. I just can’t.

Karen: She’s not normal!

Zombie: I was really hoping Jin Ae would be a character I could love, the previews of last week made her seem like such a kindred spirit (Rock ‘n Roll!) but sadly, this is not to be. I cannot get behind a selfish, spoiled brat who demands her sister pay for her whims simply because she can’t. Grow up and get a job! (Geeze, I sound old now!)

Karen: On the other hand, why did Jin Ae’s family not look for her? That didn’t make sense to me.

Tanya: Once again: back story. WE NEED BACK STORY! (Think they heard me?) Also, Jin Ae is supposed to be what, 29 years old? So 28 years old in Western years… that would still make her older than me and that level of ridiculous is…. well, ridiculous.

 rock is my life

Zombie: If you’re going to leave home as a rebel (as I’m assuming Jin Ae did since she’s the walking personification of the rebellious Rock spirit) you’re probably not going to keep in touch with your family. Even if she was never very far away, I’m pretty sure Jin Ae did all she could to stay as far out of touch with her mom and sister as possible.

Tanya: That’s what I did when I went through my rebellion stage. I was there. I just didn’t want to talk to anyone. I still wouldn’t have stolen from anyone, and if I did, it wouldn’t have been my family. Yeah, that still doesn’t sound good.

Karen: So Jin Ae is more despicable than most. I feel like she has a back story as well and her family seemed to have ignored her. It doesn’t justify what she did, but perhaps she couldn’t handle her life anymore because of it.

We’re all in agreement that we need the back story for these characters. How did you feel about this week’s episodes? What do you think will happen between Dr. Gook and Dr. Shim? Will Jin Hee continued to be trampled on by her former mother-in-law? Will Chang Min ever stop being the eternal mama’s boy?
