Alright, I know that when Pretty Man began, I was a little concerned about the direction of both the plot and the characters but I’m happy to say that after this week, my fears have been put to rest. Yes, the absurd plot-line is still there, as are the socks, but the development of the characters and their relationships has already exceeded my expectations and I couldn’t be happier.
Turns out, no matter how useless Bo Tong’s mother thinks she is, she’s actually got a pretty good head on her shoulders as well as a pure, kind and understanding heart, which has been put to good use on her quest to sell Ma Te’s socks. The endless hours of effort she’s put into finding a way to sell a warehouse’s worth of socks has finally paid off (with a little help from a fairy) and I think we’re all happy about that. I really wish Bo Tong had gotten a little more credit for the part she played in bringing about this small miracle as I think Ma Te is taking a bit too much credit, especially considering he didn’t really do anything but woo an electric fairy.
Speaking of which, I was a little surprised to see how easily the Fairy let Ma Te go. I was expecting a bit more drama there but it seems to be a talent of Ma Te’s to not only be able to steal a woman’s heart but worm his way out of a relationship without having to suffer anything on his part. I’m not going to be happy if Ma Te can get away from every woman in this series so easily. I think any guy who plays women to the degree he has, needs to feel some of the pain he’s left in his wake. Ma Te needs to experience a little heartache now and then to balance out his character and make him see the error of his ways. At least Bo Tong isn’t afraid to call him out on his behavior with women; someone has to make him realize he isn’t the perfect man he sincerely believes he is.
I have to say, for me, the best part of this entire drama is watching Ma Te struggle to understand his feelings for Bo Tong. Oh how I laughed at the many moments of unrecognized jealousy on Ma Te’s part. That poor boy doesn’t realize just how bad he’s got it for Bo Tong which means we get to revel in the bliss of his ignorance a little longer. Seriously, there’s nothing cuter than a guy who can’t understand the strange feelings of jealously that have recently started to plague him. Oh Ma Te, how I love your naivety when it comes to your true feelings! Ma Te has spent his entire adult life chasing after women without ever having feelings for them and now that he’s starting to develop feelings for Bo Tong, he just doesn’t know what to do with himself. Naturally, he can’t admit he’s actually falling for a girl as ordinary as Bo Tong, though he’s beginning to admit to himself she’s not as ordinary as he’d always believed her to be. What’s amazing is that as clueless as Ma Te is about his own feelings, he’s got David’s pegged. I guess it’s like the Fairy said, you can see other people’s buttons but you can’t see what’s in your own heart…
Speaking of David, is it just me or is he getting more adorable with every episode? Not only is he a cutie, but he’s also super sweet and he “gets” Bo Tong in every way, which makes him awesome enough plus he plays the guitar, and writes songs, which means he’s now one of the coolest guys ever. When you add to all of that a guy who can see through all of Ma Te’s crap, understand Ma Te’s true feelings for Bo Tong and willingly take on the challenge of winning Bo Tong’s heart, despite her crush on Ma Te, you’ve got a second male lead that’s sure to break each and every one of our hearts. I just hope he doesn’t suffer Ji Hoo’s fate and end up utterly alone at the end…that would just be sad.
