FRIDAY NIGHT DRAMA: The Musical

titleBeing the die-hard fan of musicals that I am, I decided that this week I’d introduce (or re-introduce) you to what’s believed to be the very first K-drama musical, The Musical.

Go Eun Bi has potential

The Musical is the story of one brave med school student, Go Eun Bi, who has always dreamed of becoming a musical actress. Sick of living the life everyone expects her to live, Eun Bi decides to wander from the “safe” path in her life and instead, pursue her long-time acting dream. After no training and numerous rejections, Eun Bi decides, out of desperation, to audition for a male role, figuring if she dressed up like a guy, no one would notice. opera ghostUnlike most women in K-dramas who dress like me, Eun Bi’s disguise doesn’t work at all and she’s thrown out of the audition without a second thought. Completely desperate, Eun Bi happens to run into Hong Jae Yi, a former musical writer and current pop composer, who decides to help Eun Bi fulfill her dream.

cuteFans of Boy Over Flowers will immediately recognize Eun Bi as she’s played by none other than Gu Hye Sun or Goo Joon Pyo’s (Lee Min Ho) love interest, Geum Jan Di. This time around Gu Hye Sun plays the love interest of the adorable Daniel Choi who, without a doubt, has some of the cutest “guy in love” moments in all of Dramaland.

love rivalIf you’re looking for a cute drama full of fee-good moments and lots of heart, The Musical may be exactly what you need, it’s sweet, the male lead is adorable and despite its more melodramatic tendencies, it never goes so far over the top that you feel the need to repeatedly bang your head against the desk in frustrationdrinking coffee. Of course, if musicals aren’t your thing, stay away, as the title implies, this drama has its fair share of singing and not all of it’s pretty. Seriously Eun Bi! Lessons are a must!
